Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

About the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

Canon's 50mm f/1.8 should be a staple in everyone's camera bag. Known as the nifty-fifty it provides a prime lens at an affordable price with great optics that offer beautiful bokeh when shooting wide open.

It's a compact lens, measuring just 40mm long and the updated STM model has a really smooth focusing mechanism.

The lens is compatible with a wide range of Canon camera's including all DSLRs and even with mirrorless cameras with the use of an adapter.

Our thoughts

When buying my DSLR, getting a nifty-fifty was a no brainer and completely changed how I approached photography. It was a staple lens during my Project 365 and continues to be my go to lens for everything. Sometimes I step down to a 24mm lens (which is my second favourite), but I try to stick to 50mm for a natural field of view.

The wide aperture brings beautiful bokeh with no effort; just put your camera into AV (aperture priority) mode, open the lens to f/1.8, focus on your subject and shoot away.
